Växjö is ENGAGEd!
![]() |
The City of Växjö is a municipality with 84 000 inhabitants and is located in the province of Småland, 250 km in north of Copenhagen. For many years, Växjö has taken local responsibility for global problems and has actively worked for a reduced effect on the climate and for a better environment. It all began with the lake restorations in the 1970s, the introduction of district heating from renewable energy in the 1980s and the decision to become a fossil fuel free municipality in the 1990s. Collaboration, broad political support and financial contributions are important factors to success. These activities are based on the Environmental Programme for the City of Växjö, other political decisions together with measures and follow-up. The target until 2015 is a reduction of 55% of fossil carbon dioxide emissions per inhabitant from 1993, and the result is a reduction of 41 % in 2011. Växjö continues the long term work and strives to be fossil fuel free in 2030. |
