Leicester is the UK's first environment city. It is situated in the East Midlands region and was once a thriving textiles and manufacturing city. The city has a large, diverse popluation and is home to Europe's largest undercover market. Leicester has a very ambitious aim: to become Britain's most sustainable city. To help achieve this two of its priorities are to reduce the carbon footprint of the city and plan for people not cars. Leicester has ambitious mitigation, adaptation and environmental policies to help tackle climate change and reduce carbon emissions. The city signed the European Covenant of Mayors in January 2009. Current projects include extending the district CHP, offering grants to SMEs to increase their energy efficiency and develop environmental management systems, using intelligent metering in all Council buildings, and is also home to the national Carbon Action Network. |
