Make Växjö Greener!7 November 2011 | 14h16 | 163 visits The 29th of October 2011 was a very special day in the City of Växjö, Sweden. Last Saturday, an Energy Day was organised within the ENGAGE campaign, and under the framework of the Covenant of Mayors. About 1300 people were estimated to have visited the library during the day with most expressing a very positive attitude to the environmental work Växjö is carrying out, and taking the opportunity to discuss environmental issues with the Växjö representatives. A big exhibition allowed among others the municipal departments, housing companies and the energy company to demonstrate their activities to make Växjö Greener. It was a great opportunity for the technical department to market their plans to collect household waste for biogas production, and for the energy advisor to meet people. The visitors could participate in a competition by answering questions that were available at each stand. The exhibition was also visited by the City of Stockholm and their initiative to show the citizens their climate impact from their lifestyle. People collected bags with different weights representing the CO2 emissions from different energy uses, transport habits, consumption etc, and put the bags in a shopping basket. Then the basket was weighed to display the total emissions of that person over a year. Around 45 posters were made during the day, and in total, 170 posters have been made in Växjö! Four micro-seminars were also arranged. Among the subjects presented were a seminar about Växjö’s work with electric vehicles and a seminar about Växjö’s climate targets. A theatrical show involving a super hero, Captain Zoom, who wants to save the world entertained the children, and a choir entertained the adults. The library café served delicious ecological soup to hungry citizens. Another interesting ingredient of the day was the Challenge of the Politicians. Two politicians have during some weeks been challenging each other in who can save the most energy and travel most by bike. This day, they were in competition against each other in a knowledge quiz and a recycling competition. City of Växjö |
